Because of these strenuous conditions in the kingdom, revolts were launched throughout the country demanding the overthrow of the monarchy.
On July 14, 1789, the French Revolution caught fire and public sentiment rose as thousands demanded that the king and queen be brought to Paris. The helpless king was terror as the queen made several futile attempts to maintain their monarchy.
In 1792 the monarchy in France was abolished by decision of the French National Congress and the royal couple was arrested. A trial meeting of "Louis XVI" was held, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out and the king guillotines were executed on January 21, 1793.
Marie Antoinette was tried on various cases and charges including theft and treason, and was unjustly accused of sexually abusing her son. She was also sentenced to death and guillotined on October 16, 1793.
